ANNUAL REPORT 2010 - 11
I am very much pleased to present the 13th annual report of Paavai Polytechnic College.
| ° | The academic year 2010-2011 started with the orientation programme for the staff and it was conducted by the Jaycee trainer, Mr.T.K.Chandrasekaran and his team members, for three days from 27th to 29th May 2010. |
| ° | The classes for II & III year commenced on 2nd June 2010, in a traditional manner with a lot of enthusiasm. |
| ° | Induction training programme for staff on pedagogy was organized and conducted by the Principal Mr. A.C. Soundarajan, from 7th to 17th June 2010. |
| ° | The inaugural function for the I year classes was held on 1st July 2010. The function started with Ganesa and Saraswathi Pooja. Thiru. K. Palanisamy, Sakthi Auto Components, Deputy General Manager was the Chief Guest and he delivered an inspiring speech on the topic “ Varuga Valarga Vazhga” |
| ° | Electronics & Communication Engineering association was inaugurated on 5th August 2010. Ms.R. Sowmiya, M/s Spir Solutions Pvt Ltd Salem, was the Chief Guest . |
| ° | 64th Independence Day was celebrated on 15th August 2010, in a grand manner. The Chairman of Paavai Institutions hoisted the National Flag and distributed the prizes to the winners of various competitions conducted in connection with 64th Independence Day. |
| ° | Kongu groups conducted a cultural programme for college students on 19th Dec 2010 at Karur. About 100 students participated in various cultural activities. |
| ° | Guruvanakam and Paadha Pooja were performed on behalf of The Teachers’ Day Celebration on 5th September 2010, by the students to the Teachers. |
| ° | Youth Week Festival was celebrated from 20th to 24th December 2010. Various events were conducted and many students participated and got the appreciation certificate. |
| ° | Automobile Engineering association was inaugurated on 21st January 2011.
The Chief Guest was S. Suresh Kumar, Deputy Engineer (Maintenance) JSW, Salem. |
| ° | Republic Day was celebrated on 26th January 2011, in a grand manner. The Chairman of Paavai Institutions hoisted the National flag and took the March Past Salute. |
| ° | State Level Technical Symposium “Technozium 2011” was conducted on 27th January 2011. Shri V. G. Manoharan, Chief Engineer, Mettur Thermal Power Station, TNEB, Mettur Dam, was the Chief Guest. Students from various colleges participated and presented papers. The best papers were awarded with cash prizes. |
GUEST LECTURE
| ° | To improve the subject knowledge of the students, industrial experts from different fields were invited to deliver Guest Lectures. |
| ° | The Departments of EEE & ECE conducted a Guest Lecture program on 15th July 2010, for second year students. The Chief Guest Mr. N. Raja, M/s Raja Electronics Services, Cuddalore, delivered a lecture on “Testing of Electronics devices and Components.” He also delivered the lecture on “Trouble Shooting of Audio & Video Equipments”, for the final year ECE students. |
| ° | A Guest Lecture program was conducted by the Electrical and Electronics Association on 9th July 2010. The lecture entitled “Eliminator Transformer” was delivered by Mr. C. Mohan Proprietor, Sowdambika Electricals, Salem. |
| ° | The Computer Engineering Association conducted a Guest Lecture on 22nd July 2010, for final year students about “Network Security.” The lecture was delivered by Mr. Ponn Senthil, Security Analyst, M/s Access Point, Salem. |
| ° | On 23rd July 2010, the Computer Engineering Association conducted a Guest Lecture program for second year students on “Real Time Operating System”. The Guest Lecture was delivered by Mr. C. Venkatesan, System Administrator and Mr. T. Sankar, Network Administrator, M/s Access Point, Salem. |
| ° | The Electrical & Electronics Engineering Department arranged a Guest Lecture program on 26th July 2010, for Final Year Students, the topic is “General Electrical Safety and Earthing”. Mr. N. Chandrasekaran, Production Manager, M/s Mega win Switchgear Pvt Ltd, Salem, was the chief guest. |
| ° | The Mechanical Engineering Department arranged a Guest Lecture On 31st July 2010, for final year students on “Non – Destructive Testing on Metals.”
Er.R.Vaigundanathan, section Engineer, Railway Division, Salem, delivered the lecture. |
| ° | A Guest Lecture Programme was conducted by the Computer Department on 5th August 2010. A Lecture was delivered about “Advanced Data Bases.” by Mr. S. Baskaran and Ms.D.Vasumathi . |
| ° | On 7th August 2010, The Electrical & Electronics Communication association arranged a Guest Lecture on “Motor Winding.” A Lecture was delivered by Mr. Mohan, Sowdambiga Electricals, Salem. |
| ° | A Guest Lecture program was presented by Mr. S. Sivasubramaniam, ExecutiveEngineer, TNEB, Negamam, on 17th August 2010, for the students of Electrical & Electronics Department on “Power Factors and its improvements.” |
| ° | The Electrical & Electronics Engineering Department arranged a Guest Lecture program on 20th December 2010. A Lecture was delivered by Mr. Andiappan, Assistant Engineer, TNEB, Salem on “Substation Equipments.” |
| ° | On 22nd December 2010, The Electrical & Electronics Engineering Department conducted a Guest Lecture program on “Types of Relays.” A Lecture was delivered by Mr. K.R. Elango, Assistant Engineer – Maintenance, TNEB, Salem. |
| ° | The students of Electrical & Electronics Engineering Department got benefited by a Guest Lecture entitled “Maintenance of Electrical Machines”. It was delivered by Mr. C. Mohan, Proprietor, Sri Sowdambiga Electricals, Salem, on 27th Dec 2010. |
| ° | The Electronics & Communication Engineering Department arranged a Guest Lecture on “Optical Networks.” A Lecture was delivered on 29th Dec 2010, by Mr. K.S. Venkatasubramanian, Deputy General Manager, BSNL, Salem. |
| ° | The Department of Computer Science Engineering conducted a Guest Lecture program on 11.12.10. A Lecture on “Search Engine Optimization” was delivered by Mr. K. Dilip and Mr. S. Bharathiraja, Access Point, Salem |
| ° | On 31st Dec 2010, The Electronics & Communication Engineering Department arranged a Guest Lecture on “Power Line Carrier Communication.” A Lecture was delivered by Mr. R. S. Shankar, Assistant Engineer, TNEB, Salem. |
SPORTS & GAMES
Besides Academic activities, our students participated in various tournaments in divisional and State Level competitions and won the prizes.
| ° | Tamil Nadu State Level Yoga Championship was held on 15th August 2010, at Chennai. The students participated and two of them won the 4th place. |
| ° | On 16th August 2010, IPAA Salem Divisional Level Men Basket Ball tournament was held at Paavai Polytechnic College. Our college students participated and came out as Divisional winners. |
| ° | State Level Open Inter College Basket Ball Tournament was held from 04.09.10 to 07.09.10 at Karur. Our college Basket Ball Team participated and won 4th place. |
| ° | R.Manikandan of final year Automobile student participated in 200mts and won I-prize in Vysya Olympics Tournament held at Madurai on 25.12.10 and 26.12.10. |
| ° | IPAA Divisional Level Volley Ball Tournament was held on 27.12.10 and 28.12.10 at PGP Polytechnic College, Namakkal. Our college women team won III Prize. |
| ° | On 29.12.10 and 30.12.10, IPAA Sate Level Basket Ball Tournament was held at Villupuram, Our college men team won III – Prize. |
| ° | IPAA Salem Divisional Athletics meet was held on 19.01.11 and 20.01.11 at Bharath Polytechnic College and our students won many prizes. The winners of the Athletics meet were selected for IPAA State Level Tournament, which was held at Latha Madhavan Polytechnic College, Madurai, during the last week of February 2011. |
YRC
| ° | One day District Level World Aids Awareness Programme was held on 01.12.10 at CSI Polytechnic College, Salem. Our College NSS Volunteers participated and created awareness against AIDS. |
| ° | On 15.12.10 & 16.12.10, First Aid programme was conducted. About 256 students participated. |
INDUSTRIAL VISIT
To gain practical knowledge, Industrial visits were organized for the students.
| ° | On 26th July 2010, our final year DEEE students visited Mettur Thermal Power Station. |
| ° | On 29th July 2010, Second Year DEEE students visited

| ° | Our final year Computer engineering students visited TamilNadu Newsprint paper limited, on 31st July 2010 at Pugalur, Karur. |
| ° | On 7th Aug 2010, our final Year DAE students visited Ashok Leyland, Driver Training Institute, Namakkal. |
| ° | Our final year Automobile students visited Star Coach, Atal Coach and Gemini Coach, at Karur on 14.08.10 |
| ° | On 21st Jan 2011, Second year Mechanical Engineering Students visited Southern Railway workshop at Trichy. |
Parents Meeting
In order to discuss the academic performance of the students, Parents meet was conducted frequently.
| ° | To discuss the academic performance of second and Third year students, a Parents Meeting was organized on 14.08.10. About 100 parents attended the meeting. |
| ° | On 28.08.10 Parents meet was organized for the first year students and discussed their academic performance. About 150 parents attended the meet. |
| ° | Parents meet was conducted on 26.10.10 for the first year students and discussed their academic performance. |
| ° | On 12.01.11, Parents meeting was organized for the I year students who secured low mark in the Oct’2010 Examination. |
NSS Activities
| ° | Environment Protection Awareness cycle Rally was organized on 09.09.10. One NSS program officer with 50 NSS Volunteers participated in the rally held at Namakkal. |
| ° | On 07.12.10 Free Blood Group Screening Camp was conducted by our NSS Unit at Paavai Polytechnic College. |
| ° | ‘A Blood Donation Camp’ was organized on 20.12.10 by the NSS Unit and nearly 150 students donated blood. |
| ° | NSS Special Camp was organized at Kannoorpatty village from 28.01.11 to 03.02.11 by our NSS Units. One day free medical camp was organized by our NSS Unit on 30.01.11. Dr. Mr. M. Ramakrishnan, MBBS, DCH and other leading Doctors, Maternity Specialists participated and rendered their precious service to the Public & distributed medicine at free of cost. |
RRC (RED RIBBON CLUB)
| ° | On 22.07.10 Red Ribbon Club organized an Aids Awareness cultural programme and it was conducted by TANSACS. Around 250 students have participated in various sports activities conducted by RRC and won the prizes. |
| ° | Aids Awareness programme was conducted on 10.12.2010 by Red Ribbon Club at Paavai Polytechnic College. Nearly 100 students participated and some RRC Volunteers visited ICTC (Integrated Counseling and Testing Centre) at Rasipuram. |
WORKSHOP
| ° | Workshop was conducted on 19.07.10 for Final year EEE students on the following topics:
1. Double Layer Winding for Three Phase Motor.
2. No Volt coil Winding for starters.
3. Winding for Single Phase Motor. |
| ° | On 07.08.10 a workshop was organized by Electrical & Electronics Engineering Association on “Motor Re-Winding” for Final year EEE students. The Workshop was headed by Mr. C. Mohan, Proprietor, Sri Sowdambiga Electrical Service Centre, Arisipalayam, Salem. |
PAPER PRESENTATION
Our students have actively participated in many symposium and presented Technical papers on various Topics.
| ° | Final Year ECE Students R. Prithiviraj and P. Venkatesh presented a paper on “4G Migration” at P.A.C Ramaswamy Polytechnic College, Rajapalayam and won the cash award of Rs. 1000/- |
| ° | At NPA centenary Polytechnic College, M. Manikandan and J. Manikandan of Final year DCSE students presented a paper on “3G Technology on 28.01.2011 and won the 3rd Prize. |
| ° | J. Manikandan and M. Dhineshkumar of Final Year DCSE students presented a paper on “Cloud Computing” held on 29.01.11 at Kongu Polytechnic College, Perundurai and won the second prize. |
| ° | Final Year DCSE students M. Manikandan and K. Jambukumar presented a paper on “Open Source Technology” at Pavai Varam Polytechnic College held on 11.02.2011 and won the second prize. |
| ° | Final year DAE students P. Nagaraj and M. Nagarajan presented a paper on “Advanced Manufacturing Technology” at Muthyammal Polytechnic College on 7.01.2011 and won the second prize. |
| ° | R. Prithiviraj and P. Venkatesh of Final year ECE students presented a paper on “4G Networks” at Nanda Polytechnic College, Erode and won second Prize. |
| ° | Final year DME students, R. Soundappan and S. Varunprasanth presented a paper on “Recent Trends on Automobile Technology” at Kottai Mariamman Polytechnic College and won 3rd Prize. |
BOARD EXAMINATION RESULTS
Two Students, K.Jambu Kumar of III DCSC and V.Mohana Priya of II DCSC secured 599 out of 600 and received gold coin.
CAMPUS INTERVIEW / PLACEMENT
| ° | A Campus Recruitment Drive was conducted on 10.12.10 by M/s Lucas TVS, Chennai at Paavai Polytechnic College. 131 students participated and 113 were selected. |
| ° | On 10th Jan 2011 Campus Recruitment Drive was conducted by M/s L.G. Balakrishnan Brother Pvt Ltd., at Paavai Polytechnic College. 88 students participated and 54 were selected. |
| ° | A Campus Recruitment Drive was conducted by Titan Pvt Ltd., Hosur, on 18th Jan 2011 at Rajiv Gandhi Polytechnic College, Chennaimalai. In our College, 36 students participated and 9 of them were selected. |
| ° | LUCAS TVS conducted a Campus Recruitment Drive on 21.01.2011 at Kaveri Polytechnic College, Mecheri. Our College Student, S. Karthick Kannan from DME was selected. |
| ° | On 25.01.11, Campus Recruitment Drive for women was conducted by M/s Lucas TVS, Pondicherry at Paavai Polytechnic College. From our College, 44 students participated and 40 students were selected. |
| ° | S. Obuliraj of Third year student participated in the Off Campus recruitment drive conducted at Shivani Institute of Technology and was placed in M/s Reynolds Nizam with a salary of Rs.15000/- per month. |
CANADA INDIA INSTUTIONAL COOPERATION PROJECT
India Institutional Cooperation Project is a Human
Resource Development Project. It was launched by an MoU between Canadian Government and Indian Government. Our Polytechnic College was selected under phase XI replication from the year 2009 for implementation. The Project has focused on developing the following Thrust areas:
1. Strategic Planning
2. Continuing Education
3. Student Services
4. Staff Development
5. Women in Development
6. Facility Development
| ° | A Strategic Planning group has been formed to prepare the strategic plan for the effective functioning of CIICP thrust areas and to achieve the developments. |
| ° | A Plan was developed during the year 2010 – 2011 and approved for implementation. |
| ° | A Review meeting was held on 22.11.10 to discuss the new courses proposed, Budget and Remuneration to the staff members who handle the Continuing Education classes. |
| ° | In Continuing Education four courses were conducted and 235 students participated and benefited. The course was started during the month of July 2010 and completed in the month of Feb 2011. |
| ° | On 22.11.10, a Planning Review meeting was conducted by our Principal and discussed the New Courses and Budget for the year 2010 – 11. |
| ° | A Personality development programme was conducted on 21.08.10 for all the final year students of Paavai Polytechnic College. The Guest Speaker was Miss. G. Arathana, MBA, Lecturer, Paavai Engineering College. |
| ° | Dr.Sudha, M.B.B.S., Assistant Surgeon Primary Care Health Centre, Puduchatram participated and delivered a lecture on Health and Hygiene on 28.08.10 under the Thrust Area of Women in Development. About 200 girl students and women faculties were benefited. |
| ° | A Guest Lecture programme under Staff Development on ‘Use of Visual Aids’ was conducted by the Principal on 21.12.10. |
| ° | Essay and Quiz competitions were conducted on 10.01.2011 for the girl students of Paavai Polytechnic College under the Thrust Area of Women in Development and the Prizes were distributed to winners. |
| ° | Mrs. T. Madhumathi B.Sc., B.L., Legal lawyer conducted a “Legal Rights Awareness Program for Women” under the Thrust Area of Women in Development. About 200 girl students and women faculties were benefited. |
| ° | Continuing Education Manager’s Workshop was conducted at Government Polytechnic College for Women, Coimbatore from 21st to 24th July 2010. The CEM & his back up were trained. |
| ° | Financial Management Workshop was conducted at PAC Ramasamy Raja Polytechnic College, Rajapalayam on 13.0810 & 14.08.10. The CEM and his back up were trained. |
| ° | On 9th to 11th Dec 2010 a Staff Development Manager’s Workshop was conducted at Government Polytechnic College, Trichy. The SDM and his back up were trained. |
| ° | Problem Based Learning, Training the trainer programme was conducted from 28.02.2011 to 04.03.2011 by Canadian Community Colleges at Chennai. Mr.P. Rameshkumar HOD/ECE participated. |
| ° | Training on CNC Machines is going to be held at Karpagam Polytechnic College, Coimbatore from 7th to 11th March 2011. Mr. P. Chakravarthi HOD/DAE will participate. |
| ° | The successful development of this Strategic Plan is a result of encouragement and support given by our management and all our stakeholders. The gradual process of this plan has been followed systematically and in such a manner, implementation of the plan will certainly act towards the growth of the Polytechnic. |
A NOTE OF CONCLUSION
          The academic year 2010 -2011 sailed by with varied activities being imprinted in archives of the college. It is an ongoing process and we love to do it. We march with great vision and we are truly optimistic in achieving it.
          My sincere thank goes to our management who lent their helping hand at all the moments. I thank all the staff members for their cooperation and service rendered to the student community. I am grateful to parents and well-wishers of the college for their long lasting support.
